Immediate Opening: Engineer Intern – Summer 2026
Cardinal Engineering, a company supporting the design and development of systems of national interest, is seeking interns to join our world-class engineering team. Cardinal Engineering provides expert technical engineering services to the Department of Defense and other U.S. Government Departments and Agencies primarily focused on technology development and the design and acquisition of new subsystems, systems, and systems-of-systems of critical national importance. Our work includes cradle to grave system support, from concept formulation, design, analysis, modeling & simulation, prototyping and testing, to fabrication, operation, and maintenance. An exciting and growing aspect of this work includes the digitalization of marine-related systems and processes that pave the way for economical, efficient, and effective life cycle management of next generation technologies. Our engineering team is looking for interns to train in every level of system design and development encompassing our wide diversity of engineering disciplines that include marine, mechanical, structural, electrical, power systems, advanced processing, machine learning, additive manufacturing, and software systems. The interns hired for this position should expect to be exposed to and learn all facets of system design and development and will leave this position with invaluable skills and knowledge.
Range of duties and responsibilities (dependent on applicant’s qualifications and interests):
- Refinement of applicable standards, specifications, and design practices.
- Analysis and simulation of complex systems.
- Generation of systems engineering documents associated with design and development of systems.
- Analysis of experimental and test data from prototypes through fielded systems.
- Design of complex systems in accordance with applicable specifications and standards.
- Development of digitalization approaches to specify, analyze, design, develop, test, and evaluate marine systems and platforms.
- Development of software for modeling and simulation and real-time processing.
- Software / web development of cloud applications for innovative, advanced & multi-discipline engineering projects.
Qualifications:
- Engineering majors with excellent critical thinking/problem solving skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with strong attention to detail.
- Familiarity with specialty engineering computational modeling and analysis programs or ability to quickly learn and apply new engineering programs.
- Proficiency in MS Office products.
- Self-starter who can work independently or in a team environment.
Additional Information:
- Seeking college undergraduates targeting 2027 or 2028 graduations or post-graduates.
- Position pays $25 – $30/ hour commensurate with years of experience.
- This is a hybrid position with both on-site work and telework expected and therefore candidates should be located within commuting distance to one of Cardinal Engineering’s offices.
- Candidate must hold or be able to obtain a U.S. DoD SECRET level security clearance.
