Immediate Opening: Modeling & Simulation (M&S) Engineer for Power Systems Applications

Cardinal Engineering is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Electrical Engineer with a strong background in power system modeling, simulation, and/or real-time Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing. The ideal candidate will play a key role in the development, integration, and validation of advanced power system technologies and associated control strategy. Candidate will support Cardinal Engineering’s Power and Energy Systems Branch on a variety of Government and Private Industry projects, including transport of cargo via rocket, next generation attack submarines, energy storage systems, wave energy converters, and power hardware test bed generation. Work with a team of three to ten engineers of various backgrounds to respond to customer requirements and deliver first to field prototype products and expert engineering support services in a growing field of disciplines. The position expectations will include:

  • Develop, optimize, and maintain detailed dynamic models of power systems and power electronic components (e.g., solid-state based power converters, electromechanical machines, and energy storage systems)
  • Develop model description documents for delivered models
  • Perform time and frequency domain analyses for systems to assess performance, stability, and response characteristics
  • Design and implement novel real-time Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing frameworks, capabilities, and approaches for validation of control and power hardware
  • Generate and maintain technical documentation, including modeling methodologies, validation reports, and test procedures for novel defense applications
  • Conduct market research and interact with industry to inform technical approach, acquisition, and design
  • Work closely with customers to provide status reports and programmatic artifacts
  • Document design decisions in technical memorandums and reports
  • Inform design, development, and operation of laboratories and test capabilities
  • Flexible hybrid or remote work environment. Candidates will be based out of our Linwood, PA office.
  • Occasional travel will be required to visit subcontractor or customer facilities (<20%).
  • Candidates must be able to obtain and hold a SECRET security clearance.

Desired background:

  • Bachelors with 10+ years or Ph.D./ Masters with 3–4 years of experience in power systems/power electronics simulation.
  • Experience with developing and executing detailed power system models in MATLAB Simulink/Simscape or similar software.
  • Experience implementing real-time power system models using OPAL-RT, RTDS, Typhoon HIL, Speedgoat, dSPACE, or similar simulation tools to perform HIL testing is a plus.
  • Experience designing and working with low voltage and medium voltage AC and DC electrical systems is a plus
  • Familiarity with energy storage technologies, specifically system integration considerations
  • Experience writing proposals and execution of Research & Development (R&D) projects is a plus

Salary commensurate with years and applicability of experience ranging from $113K – $158K.
