Immediate Opening: R&D Senior Engineer for Defense Applications

Support Cardinal Engineering’s Power and Energy Systems branch on a variety of Department of Defense projects, including: next generation surface combatants and attack submarines, shipboard and field deployed power distribution including energy storage systems, and power hardware test bed generation. Work with a team of three to ten engineers of various backgrounds to respond to customer requirements and deliver first to field prototype products and expert engineering support services in a growing field of disciplines. The position expectations will include:

  • Design and prototype activities including assembly, testing, debugging, and technical documentation for mechanical fixtures and power hardware
  • Generate drawings, engineering products, and design packages for novel defense applications
  • Conduct market research and interact with industry to inform acquisition and design
  • Work closely with defense customers to provide status reports and programmatic artifacts
  • Document design decisions in technical memorandums and reports
  • Inform test plans and procedures for laboratory testing
  • Work with other engineers to conduct Modeling and Simulation (Matlab, FEA, power system modeling) as required
  • Perform office and laboratory upgrades and maintenance as required
  • Occasional travel will be required to visit subcontractor or government facilities (<20%)

Desired background:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace, Mechatronics or Computer Engineering
  • Advanced degree preferred
  • 5-10+ years experience working in a related industry
  • Experience designing and working with low voltage and medium voltage AC and DC electrical systems
  • Familiarity with lithium battery technologies, specifically system integration considerations
  • Pulsed power system experience including low energy, high power loads and system level installation considerations
  • Familiarity with real-time modeling and simulation of power system architectures using commercially available software and hardware products (OPAL-RT, Typhoon, RTDS, etc.) a plus
  • Experience developing systems engineering artifacts (Plans of Actions & Milestones, Risk Registries, Integrated Master Schedules, Requirements Verification Traceability Matrices, etc.) for delivery to with Department of Defense customers a plus
  • Experience briefing senior civilian federal employees and active duty military personnel a plus
  • Experience and comfort working with hand tools and power tools in a laboratory environment
  • Experience using electrical test equipment including power supplies, load banks, multimeters, data acquisition equipment, etc.

Additional Details

  • Location: Hybrid work environment with in-office requirements based on project need, anticipated approximately 3 days per week at Cardinal Engineering’s Linwood, PA facility
  • Salary: Anticipated salary range is between $90,000 – $160,000 (Engineer to Principal Engineer positions)
  • Clearance: Must currently possess or be capable of obtaining a SECRET security clearance.
